Monday Meme Madness - end of summer edition

Welcome to today's edition of Monday Meme Madness where we like to dissect dumb memes you can find on the internet.

Enough with the intro! Bring on the memes!

Meme #1: "Can an atheist get insurance against Acts of God?"

This is the first time I've seen square-faced, square-eyed meme woman, but maybe it's a new image going around. I guess it's supposed to convey that something just ain't right here. But mainly, I just find the image a little ludicrous. I guess I'm really blasé about the photoshopping thing now. I mean, it's definitely not as weird as some of the filters out there or that program DeepDream that just puts random eyes in pictures

The next curiosity about this meme is why the word acts is capitalized. Is it like the book of Acts in the Bible? Did these acts become special because god did them? So many questions.

Beyond that, while I think the play on words is fine and all, it overlooks the concept that the term "acts of God" is a synonym for natural disaster. It's a bit unfortunate that it references god, but I mean so what? I still call today Monday but I don't worship the moon and I still call Thursday by that name even though I don't believe in Thor. There are lots of these artifacts in our language that mention a deity but don't require any belief.

Granted, I'd like this expression to go away from the lexicon and be replaced by natural disasters. Who can I apply to get this change put in? I really don't like the term acts of god, but I know insurance companies use it.

By the way, if you are getting insurance against "acts of God" make sure you know how it's defined. Flooding related to hurricanes is not covered, for example. I guess "god" only did the wind part.

Meme #2: "2 atheists walk into a bar converted them"

Here's another bizarre image. I mean, it's technically a meme in the sense of image + saying equals meme.

There's nothing clever. The image is strange. Is that really a nun or a man dressed as a nun? Did showing the fist convert them? They must not have been skeptics if they could just hear a nun in a bar  and convert. I mean, what could she say, hey the wine and bread turn into the blood and body of Jesus Christ, and the atheists are just like holy shit! You've blown our minds! Now we believe. Yeah, I don't think so.

Maybe this one isn't really even a Christian meme. If it is an atheist making fun of Christians, it's not very good on that count either.

That's the problem with the internet. You can never know what is sincere or what is ironic. I would believe this one either way. And either way it's bad.
