What Biblical prophets look like today?
The Bible
is full of people like Moses who supposedly had long chats with Yahweh or Paul
who had a vision of Christ. There are also plenty who had visions like Ezekiel
or were visited by an angel like Abraham. I have at times wondered what the
claims of these prophets would look like today.
Would they
resemble Harold Camping? Who could forget that the world was supposed to end
back in 2012? Jim Bakker? As I write this, he is still on TV selling meals for
the apocalypse. Would the prophets be like this retired firefighter who claims
that God has spoken to him about his plans to lift Donald Trump up and fight
the evil that resides in the US? Would they look like anti-LGBT Bryan Fischer?
As I look
at modern day prophets, I wonder to what extent they believe what they say and
to what extent they are scammers or grifters. This is a question I cannot really
resolve. Sure, most people dismiss them as crackpots, but still they have a
platform, a microphone and they impact our national discourse.
It is the
outsized role that these modern-day prophets have on our national policy
discourse that has motivated me to want to start a blog. They have a right to
believe what they want, but they do not have the right to force their beliefs
on any of us.
