Worrying about Wickedness, Part I

I fail to see how this is going to bring about destruction

One of the hallmarks of professional Christian conservative yackers is an obsession about what other people are doing and whether or not their god approves.

Enter Rick Wiles who is concerned America is becoming a modern Sodom and Gomorrah because some drag queens are reading books to children at an optional event at a library at which the parents are present. Reading about them and watching the video, they sound really cute and seem really into charity work.

But, no no no no! You see they make Wiles want to vomit! America has become wicked! Perverse! We deserve judgment. He says: "How long do you think the righteous, holy God is going to allow America's sodomites to defile children?" Um, they're reading books and the parents are present. He goes on to accuse them of being pedophiles.

I would just like to repeat: this is an optional activity that parents are choosing and the parents are there too. The drag queens don't really talk about being a drag queen. They read books to children.

What bothers me is the presumption that this is wicked and god is going to judge everyone. Of course, I know the Biblical Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and drowned the earth because of its wickedness, so I know where Wiles gets his ideas. In the real world, I see a lot of people who should bring down a deity's wrath and somehow don't (cough cough Hitler cough cough the Inquisition cough cough).

And, oh, by the way, back in 2014 Wiles thought Ebola could solve all of America's problems with atheist, homosexuality, pornography, sexual promiscuity and abortion. You see, with the fear of death people will all be lining up for Jesus! I forget, who is supposed to be the wicked one? The one living their life or the person joyous about suffering?

On another topic, there is some dispute over the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorroah. Not everyone agrees that homosexuality was the real reason that god wanted to destroy them. Many scholars think it was about a lack of hospitality. The interpretation hinges on the word "to know" and whether it refers to "know sexually." Granted, I think it's all BS, but if you're going to base your morality off of this, it would be good to know what it was.
