Beware Here be Demons

Paula White, spiritual advisor to the president, was back on Jim Bakker's show because why not? She claims the president is under attack by demons because of his SCOTUS appointees.

Now, just to be clear, at this point he has appointed one justice to the Supreme Court, and the speed at which he did seemed to impress White, who said, "He did it the fastest, which was an absolute miracle by God." Well, if you discount that Congress refused to entertain the Obama appointee and waited for a republican appointee that would truly take Antonin Scalia's place. I hardly think that a god intervened, more like a bunch of assholes wanting to deny Obama something.

And I just have to say, what does some supernatural deity care about our constitution and whether a justice is an "originalist" - which means nothing really, when you get down to it. It's just a label to put on conservative opinions which may or may not match what the founders were actually thinking, but, like appeals to god, it stops discussion because how can you argue with such great men?

But digression aside, this is a real question: why does some god care about our constitution? Why does he care how many senators we have? How many representatives? How bills originate? Whether or not a post office can be established? It seems especially strange that a god would care given that most of human history the US constitution did not exist at all, nor did the US. Doesn't a supreme being have better things to do with its time-outside-being?

The next thing that I would like to know is where is the evidence of all these demons? I have never seen a demon nor have I seen activity I would attribute to a demon, but White thinks that having more super-originalist, super-constitutionalist justice will mean "we'll be able to overturn demonic laws and decrees." And lucky for everyone, Trump is super-duper-Christian and "loves prayer" because "principalities" cannot get in.

I'm sure the "demonic laws and decrees" have to do with abortion and LGBTQ rights because demons love themselves some dead babies and gay sex.

One thing I don't get about this god, why is he so passive? Why does he allow demons to run around and make his creation an evil place? This isn't a question of free will because this has to do with actual policies being passed not an individual's ability to make moral choices. Why does he allow demons to influence the political process? Can't he wave an appendage and swat them away?

If White were just a nice lady who minded her own business and had some screwy thoughts, I wouldn't care all that much. But this is someone who supposedly has the president's ear and regularly appears on television to muddy the waters about what needs doing in our country. And let me be clear, until you show me there are demons causing mayhem that I should worry about, I am not going to believe in them. And ditto for this deity that supposedly loves us and wants us to spend eternity with him. Until you show me he exists and that he wants what he says, I have no reason to believe anything you say. I see real problems in the world that demand real answers. Swatting at demons and praying to gods cannot help us do any real work.
